Brewery Blog

Summer's End.... (September 2011)

Hello everybody. Well Summer has drawn to a close, but it's not all bad news, because September has come round again, which means that Green Hop Beer is once again on sale in the brewery shop! We still have a few cases left, so if you want some, get yourselves over to Dunham Massey!

Another good thing about moving into the Autumn is that it's time for this years National Cask Ale Week, which is running from 1st - 9th October. As an opening to the week, we've arranged to have a Meet the Brewer event at Costello's Bar in Goose Green. The event will be on Sunday 2nd October at 19:30. Head brewer John Costello will be on site to give you a talk on the brewery, and to guide you through the various beers that Costello's has on offer, as well giving those who attend a sneal preview to our brand new brew!

So what is this brand new brew? Well, it's going to be five per cent ABV, and it will be a malty, tawny coloured, traditional English ale, spiced with fennel. The trials have been completed, and the finished product is extremely nice. As for it's name, we spent hours brain storming, and trawling through various internet sites to try and find something interesting that would suit the beer, and also suit us. We came across many stories about fennel, such as how the Greek town of Marathon was called this as it is believed to have been surrounded by fennel plants (Marathon incidentally is Greek for 'place of fennel') or how in Greek mythology, Prometheus used the stalk of a fennel plant to steal fire from the Gods. Also how back in old England, it was used as one of 9 ingredients in the Pagan Nine Herbs Charm, or how the Ancient Romans named fennel 'The Herb of Sight' due to it's ability to seemingly improve eyesight. However, although we came up with some pretty interesting names, with pretty interesting back stories, none of them seemed to fit in with the rest of our range, so we've decided to call it "Dunham Spice"

"Dunham Spice" will be brewed later this week, and will hopefully be available in a pub near you sometime soon!

Awards, Awards, Awards!! (August 2011)

As some of you may have seen in the local news, our official brewery tap (Costello's Bar in Goose Green, Altrincham) scooped 2 CAMRA awards last month. It won Trafford and Hulme's Pub of the Season for Summer 2011, and also was voted the Champion Mild Pub of Manchester for this years Mild Magic Trail, the milds that were on offer throughout the trail were both Dunham Dark and Dunham Light, Chocolate Cherry Mild, and our annual brew of Dunham Brown Ale. Well the good news gets even better, as we have just received news that us as a brewery have won 4 more CAMRA awards!

The first new award we've only recently received, was for Dunham Porter, which came in 2nd place in the Porter and Stout category in this years Macclesfield Beer Festival! This award also has an additional bonus in that it continues what is becoming a tradition of winning an awards at Macclesfield Beer Festival, Dunham Porter joins Dunham Dark, Duerr's Blossom Honey Beer, and Dunham Milk Stout, as Macclesfield Award Winners!

Dunham Gold won Silver at the recent CAMRA beer festival in Chorlton. First brewed in February this year, it's the first award for our 7.2% Belgian style English Ale.

And finally down in Yapton, we got a double award! Chocloate Cherry Mild was voted as 3rd best beer of the festival, and as a brewery we came in as 3rd best brewer of the festival! As shown in the latest Western Sussex CAMRA blog.

Green Hop Beer

Yes it's almost here! The hops are growing very nicely, and we're hoping the get enough to do 2 full brews of our eagerly anticipated Green Hop Beer! As always we are at the hands of mother nature as to the exact date of when it will be brewed (as when the hops are ready, they are picked fresh literally hours before they go into the brew) but as soon as we know when we're doing it, we'll let you know, so keep you're eyes on our facebook and our twitter as this we will be announcing it on there!

A new brew, with old roots (April 2011)

Inspired by the East India Company's original pale ale (the picture on the pump clip is of The East Indiaman, Repulse) comes East India Pale Ale. It is a strong, light, hoppy, bitter ale, brewed at 6 per cent, using all English malts and hops. Just as the beers were back in the day!

Look out for this new brew at your local Dunham Massey outlet! Another new brew that we did not so long ago is Dunham Gold, which has been received so well, we are now keeping it as a permanent fixture to be available all the way through to November, when the Winter Warmer will replace it as our strong ale.

In other news, it's almost that time of year again, yes it's almost Mild Month, which means that Dunham Brown Ale will be brewed shortly, and an additional bonus this year is that Dunham Light has been selected to be represented in this years National Mild A Day promotion, where it will be featured on CAMRA's website, facebook, and twitter feeds. Dunham Light is scheduled to be the Mild of the Day on Wednesday 11th May, more information can be found here.

7 Dunham Massey Ales in the same place! (January 2011)

Yes Costello's Bar is open! Situated in Goose Green, Altrincham, we have 6 real ale hand pumps, each one with a different Dunham Massey beer for your drinking pleasure, and to top it off we also have a dedicated lager font for "Altrincham Pilsner" our brand new Real Lager! So get yourselves down to Costello's for a nice relaxing pint of Dunham's finest.

And yes you did read it right, "Altrincham Pilsner is availble in Costello's. A true real lager, brewed as a lager should be, nothing added, no chemicals, just the 4 pure ingredients that beer should contain; water, hops, malt and yeast. Altrincham Pilsner is a true pilsner style beer, light, thirst quenching, and refreshing, and with the water in Altrincham being the same composition as that in Pilsen, Altrincham Pilsner really is as close to a proper pilsner as you can get.
